Health R&D as a global public good – Cross-sectoral learning
Geneva, 24 April 2013
The Graduate Institute The final report of the Consultative Expert Working Group (CEWG) on Research and Development (R&D) was presented in April 2012 and discussed at the World Health Assembly (WHA) 2012. In January 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) Executive Board debated a draft resolution that includes, among other items, the proposal to establish a global health R&D observatory, to facilitate the implementation of health R&D demonstration projects, to review the existing coordination function for R&D, and to develop new proposals for effective mechanisms for coordination, including pooling resources and voluntary contributions. This will be discussed at the WHA in May 2013. The purpose of the proposed seminar and workshop is to examine how to secure collective action to provide global public goods through R&D and innovation for the specific health needs of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
